How Volume Shadow Copy Service Works

Microsoft Volume Shadow Copy Service (VSS) is the underpinning of most Windows backup programs.  It is also what is underneath Volume Shadow Copy which is found in Windows Vista, Windows 7 and Windows Server 2003 and higher operating systems.  This is where you can undelete by selecting the previous version of a file or folder.   This Microsoft TechNet article discusses what VSS does.
